Sous la peau des murs

Sound installation

2024

The installation consists of 32 striking objects, all identical, that set the space they occupy vibrating. The objects consist of a light bulb and a striker that strikes the wall to which they are attached. They strike the walls, the floor, the ceiling, and various architectural elements, briefly illuminating them at the moment of impact. The 32 sounds extracted from the space are therefore all different.

Each sound reveals the hidden depths of a secluded corner of the room: varying according to the materials, their hardness, their depth, their solid and hollow parts, and the marks of time, it extracts a piece of the venue’s history. Each sound is carefully selected during a period of exploration and listening, seeking to discreetly highlight the space and its hidden sonic potential. The sounds found are intentionally subtle; the ensemble produces constellations of faint noises that travel along the walls and invite the listener to open their ears. The sound experience is enhanced by the darkness, with each sound punctuated by a white light that traces the contours of the space in dotted lines.

This installation gains its appeal by being transposed to various locations, each time prompting a new process of on-site exploration and sound extraction, with spaces featuring atypical architecture and acoustics being ideal.

The installation can operate autonomously, triggered by a program (running on a Raspberry Pi)

The installation can be activated in a musical form with the composition “Murmuration,” created in collaboration with Simon Louche and percussionist Olivier Maurel
