Fragments of nothings
2022
The entire installation, including the electronics, is made from recycled materials out of environmental concern. The result is an open system in which all the mechanical and electronic components are visible.
The installation consists of 15 sound objects (next page) connected to a central machine (opposite) that acts as a music box and controls the activation of each object. On this machine, a cylinder rotates slowly on its axis: a spray paint can whose coating has been scraped off in places, creating contact points where the current flows and activates the objects. A switch allows the public to start the installation for a 2-minute cycle.
The sound objects scattered throughout the space are the result of a form of visual improvisation, using materials gathered, assembled, and set into vibration with the aim of extracting a sound, a movement, or an attitude that is different and indeterminate each time. The choice of objects, their arrangement in the space, and the sound composition are all variables that evolve and adapt to the exhibition venue. New spray-paint cans are scraped away over the course of the exhibitions, creating new compositions.
